Client: Leading Tech Firm Consulting Company: VerticalServe

Objective The objective of this case study is to demonstrate the successful migration of Oracle Exadata to BigQuery for a leading tech firm. The migration aimed to improve the scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness of the firm’s data warehousing and analytics solution, enabling them to make better data-driven decisions and drive business growth.

Background The tech firm relied on Oracle Exadata for managing and analyzing their vast amounts of data. However, they faced challenges related to scalability, performance, and cost, which limited their ability to effectively leverage their data assets. The firm engaged VerticalServe to migrate their Exadata system to BigQuery, a fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), to address these challenges.

Solution VerticalServe designed and implemented a migration plan for the tech firm’s Exadata system to BigQuery. The solution encompassed the following components:

  1. Catalog Creation of Data Sets and Applications: A comprehensive catalog of the firm’s data sets and applications, including an analysis and mapping of tables and conversion rules management.
  2. Automation of Conversion: Development and implementation of automated processes for migrating data and schema from Exadata to BigQuery.
  3. Data Validation on BigQuery: Validation of migrated data to ensure accuracy and consistency between the source and target systems.
  4. Data Type Optimization and Tracking Changes: Optimization of data types in BigQuery and implementation of a change tracking mechanism.
  5. Application Migration and Validation: Migration of the firm’s applications to leverage the BigQuery data warehouse and validation of their functionality.
  6. Data Governance and Security Implementation: Implementation of data governance and security best practices to ensure compliance and protect sensitive data.
  7. Data Lifecycle Management on GCP: Implementation of data lifecycle management policies on GCP to optimize storage and cost.
  8. Slots and Quota Design: Design and configuration of slots and quotas in BigQuery to optimize query performance and resource utilization.
  9. Incremental Migration and Decommissioning: Execution of an incremental migration approach to minimize downtime and decommissioning of the Exadata system upon successful migration.

Implementation VerticalServe began by creating a comprehensive catalog of the tech firm’s data sets and applications, analyzing and mapping tables, and managing conversion rules. The team developed and implemented automated processes for migrating data and schema from Exadata to BigQuery, ensuring an efficient and accurate migration.

The team validated the migrated data on BigQuery to ensure accuracy and consistency between the source and target systems. They optimized data types in BigQuery and implemented a change tracking mechanism to monitor ongoing changes in the data.

VerticalServe migrated the firm’s applications to leverage the BigQuery data warehouse and validated their functionality to ensure seamless operation post-migration. The team implemented data governance and security best practices, ensuring compliance and protecting sensitive data.

The team implemented data lifecycle management policies on GCP to optimize storage and cost and configured slots and quotas in BigQuery to optimize query performance and resource utilization.

Finally, VerticalServe executed an incremental migration approach to minimize downtime and decommissioned the Exadata system upon successful migration.

Results With the successful migration of Exadata to BigQuery, the tech firm experienced the following benefits:

  1. Improved Scalability: BigQuery’s fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service allowed the firm to scale their data storage and processing capabilities as needed, accommodating their growing data volumes.
  2. Enhanced Performance: The slots and quota design and data type optimization in BigQuery ensured that the firm could efficiently analyze their vast amounts of data, improving query performance and reducing latency.
