Objective The objective of this case study is to demonstrate the successful migration of a leading media firm’s data streaming infrastructure from Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (AWS MSK) to Confluent Cloud. The implementation included capacity planning, security, and incremental migration.

Background The media firm utilized AWS MSK for its data streaming needs. However, they sought a more scalable, fully managed, and feature-rich solution to support their growing data requirements and simplify operations. The firm chose Confluent Cloud as the target platform and engaged VerticalServe to assist in the migration process.

Solution VerticalServe designed and executed a migration plan to transition the media firm’s data streaming infrastructure from AWS MSK to Confluent Cloud. The solution included the following components:

  1. Capacity Planning: Assessing the media firm’s current and future data streaming requirements to ensure adequate resources were provisioned in Confluent Cloud.
  2. Security: Implementing security measures, such as encryption, access controls, and data governance policies, to protect the media firm’s data during and after the migration.
  3. Incremental Migration: Performing the migration in stages to minimize disruption to the media firm’s operations and ensure a smooth transition.

Implementation VerticalServe started by analyzing the media firm’s existing AWS MSK infrastructure and data streaming requirements. Based on the analysis, they developed a capacity planning model to allocate appropriate resources in Confluent Cloud.

Next, the team implemented security measures to protect the media firm’s data during the migration process. This included enabling data encryption at rest and in transit, setting up access controls, and defining data governance policies.

VerticalServe then devised an incremental migration plan to minimize disruption to the media firm’s operations. The migration process involved the following stages:

  1. Configuring Confluent Cloud to mirror the media firm’s AWS MSK infrastructure and settings.
  2. Migrating a subset of data streams and applications to Confluent Cloud for testing and validation.
  3. Gradually migrating the remaining data streams and applications, while monitoring performance and addressing any issues that arose.
  4. Decommissioning the AWS MSK infrastructure once all data streams and applications had been successfully migrated to Confluent Cloud.

Throughout the migration process, VerticalServe collaborated closely with the media firm’s team to address concerns, provide guidance, and ensure a smooth transition.

Results With the successful migration to Confluent Cloud, the media firm experienced the following benefits:

  1. Scalability: Confluent Cloud provided a scalable platform that could accommodate the media firm’s growing data streaming needs.
  2. Managed Service: By adopting a fully managed solution, the media firm was able to offload infrastructure management tasks and focus on their core business.
  3. Feature-rich Platform: Confluent Cloud’s extensive features and integrations enabled the media firm to enhance their data streaming capabilities and derive more value from their data.
  4. Secure Data Handling: The implemented security measures ensured that the media firm’s data was protected during the migration and on the Confluent Cloud platform.

Conclusion The AWS MSK to Confluent Cloud migration proved to be a successful solution for the leading media firm. VerticalServe’s expertise and effective execution allowed the firm to transition to a more scalable, feature-rich, and fully managed data streaming platform, ultimately enabling them to derive greater value from their data and streamline operations.
